Whitehall - street and locality in the City of Westminster, London. The street runs between Charing Cross and the Houses of Parliament. The name Whitehall also applies to the cluster of short streets, squares, and govermental buildings adjoining the street. Whitehall has been the site of principal goverment offices since the establishment og Henry VIII's court at Whitehall Palace in the 1530s. The areas attractions include the Cenotaph war memorial, Downing street(with the prime minister's residence), the Horse Guards Parade, Great Scotland Yard ( the former home of the Metropolian Police, now at New Scotland Yard), and the Banqueting House(1619-22), designed by Inigo Jones.
